"The extensive research reveals that people who identify as Transgender are 4 times more likely to live in poverty as compared to the general population. 41% have attempted suicide based on the prejudices and discrimination they have faced (compared to 1.6% in non-Trans people) and a staggering 78% of those who came out during grades K-12 have faced harassment in some form."
Everyone Deserves Equal Rights!
Every three days, a transgender person somewhere in the world is murdered (Letellier, 2009). Many transgender women get murdered for being who they want to be. Every single person should be treated equally, and have equal rights. No one should be treated differently from others. Transgender women do not receive the same access in terms of employment, experience religious discrimination, and the access in adoptive services
According to GLBTQ: The Survival Guide for Queer and Questioning Teens- the definition for transgender is a gender identity or gender expression that differentiates from your biological sex or physical anotomy (Huegel, 2003). Transgender people should have the right to express who they want to be considered as and should not be judged or discriminated in any type of way whey they are human beings. Many transgender women try and express who they want to be known as, and for that transgender women get murdered: "121 transgender killings were reported in 2008 and 83 more have been reported in the first six months of 2009. On average researchers say, one transperson is killed every three days" (Letellier, 2009). Murdering people should not be happening around the world at all: "In the United States, the vast majority of LGBT political energies and funds devoted to fight for marriage rights, with virtually no resources dedicated to preventing transkilling" (Letellier, 2009). This goes to show what goes on and how many murders had been happening with transgender women here in the U.S just because they want to express who they feel like they are.
Knowing that there are places and people who are not judging or discriminating transgender women and actually do hire them in the work place is a good thing because that way they know that they have support by someone. Most of the time transgender women do not have the opportunity to have jobs and if they do, they might either get fired or discriminated in some way because of who they are: "Fed-Ex, the speedy, worldwide delivery company, announced it will add gender identity to its anti-discrimination hiring policies... making it illegal to discriminate against transgender people in the work place" (Letellier, 2009). Fed-Ex shows that gender identity does not matter to their company. "According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, transgender people face discrimination in virtually all areas of life, especially employment and health care... an increasing number of companies are adding such protections" (Letellier, 2009). This is a good way for people to see that they are not any different and for them to open their eyes and also to stop discriminating against transgender women. A place where transgender women are being accepted is a good step for other people to do it as well and accept transgender people for who they are. Through out the world there are many transgender women who are trying to do what they can to change the laws. "A local woman hopes to change a law in Virginia. Lori Wright is writing a bill that would revise the DMV's licensing process for transgender people. Right now in Virginia, transgender people must show proof of gender reassignment surgery" (Zosh, 2012).
Victoria Kolakowski is a transgender woman who became a judge: "To this very day you read comments on the internet about my election, you will find a few misguided people who say that I am unfit for this great responsibility because I am transgender. However, to me the real news of my being here tonight is not that a transgender person was elected as a judge, but that it was never an issue in the campaign" (Kolakowski, 2011). Many transgender women try to be something in life, famous stars, or even a judge, but were murdered just because it was not acceptable: "... a real-life vanish artist who transitioned from male to female in 1930, a move that caused an international sensation and threatened Wegeners relationship with his wife Greda" (Letellier, 2008). After this movie came out people started talking and were making threats. People need to see that no matter what, transgender women are still trying to do something good in their life and proved people wrong that they can do something good. It is wrong to see that even transgender women are trying to do something good, a change in their life and they are still being murdered.
The issue of being transgender remains a threat to transgender women and still affects transgender peoples lives everyday: "When I started out as an attorney over two decades ago, I encountered a lot of discomfort, suble, and sometimes even invidious discrimination" (Kolakowski, 2011). This suggests that transgender women are still being affected by their gender identity. This applies to the issue of discrimination by transgender doing their job and living their lives normally: "... it is not even always safe to be an out transgender person Alameda, County. Just eight years ago, a teenager, Gwen Arajo, was murdered in Alameda, County, for being transgender" (Kolakowski, 2011). Knowing that things like this happen around other places in the United States is important to know about because this warns other transgender people to be careful and tells us readers how they suffer and what they go through for being who they are. If people keep acting the way they do and keep discriminating against people, maybe later on not only transgender people, but other people as well will not open up because people do not want to be judged or discriminated. In schools and just anywhere many people, female or male, are being judged and discriminated for just being who they want to be and express themselves the way they want.
Many transgender women do not have the ability to have children of their own because of being transgender: "Unfortunately there are as many court cases that have denied custody on access by transgender parents to their children" (Sember, 2003). Many people that do good and are not bad people should have the rights to have access to adopt a baby. It is not fair that just because they are expressing themselves and want to be transgender they do not get that right: "Most agencies will not place children with members of the GLBT community, although some are neutral about this issue" (Sember, 2003). This applies to the issue of discrimination. Agencies should not put trasngender people aside but should give them the opportunity to be able to be happy and adopt.
Transgender women are all equal and should not be discriminated against. Anyone can compare to transgender people because you could have experience discrimination at least once in their life. We should all get in transgender women's shoes and notice that we all do see the same, and are not any different from one another. We are all human beings and deserve to have equal rights. Transgender women do not have the same access in terms of employment, experience religious discrimination, and the ability to adoptive services.
